Kids Biz Club is a project-based after school program for Fifth Graders that helps students learn how to start their own business and build their own business website. Currently our program is offered at Alderwood Elementary School and Cordata Elementary School in Bellingham. But we eventually hope to offer this program at elementary schools throughout Whatcom county.

Another important goal of Kids Biz Club is to help train interested community members how to act as mentors for the next generation. We are therefore looking for parents, teachers, business owners and community members interested in mentoring the next generation of innovators. No experience necessary. We will provide you with all the training you need.

The benefits of becoming a mentor is that you will not only be helping the next generation but you will also have a chance to learn about the latest ideas in starting a new business and building a business website. After all, the best way to really learn something is to try to explain it to someone else!

The time commitment to be a mentor at either of our two elementary school after school programs is about four hours per week for about 8 to 9 weeks.

The schedule for our Alderwood Program is Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm . There are a total of 12 two hour class sessions per quarter with the complete program running through Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters.

The schedule for our Cordata Program is Wednesdays and Thursdays with the Wednesday class from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and Thursdays from 12:30 am to 2:30 pm. There are a total of 12 two hour class sessions per Quarter.

The typical daily class schedule is that the lead instructor will meet with the mentors to review class activities during the first half hour. Mentors will then assist students with their projects the remaining hour. The lead instructor then meets with mentors after the class to review how the projects went and to prepare for the next class session.

There are about 10 to 12 students in each class. Our goal is to have 2 to 3 mentors per class so that each mentor will only need to work with 3 to 4 students at a time.

There will also be optional weekly mentor meetings during the course to discuss course projects and activities during the course at a time that is convenient to the mentors.

Beginning in 2020, we will also be offering the Future Tech Biz Club course in conjunction with the Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham. We are therefore also looking for mentors willing to assist with this program which has classes every Tuesday morning.
